Hammers 4 Heroes Program

Projects wanted for Hammers 4 Heroes program:

By Mary Winder, Chief reporter, The Kansas Chief

Wathena American Legion Post #161 is asking people to submit ideas for possible projects for the organization’s Hammers 4 Heroes program.  The Legion members are eager to utilize this program to help out a veteran in the Wathena, Elwood, or Troy area who needs assistance with a one-day or weekend home maintenance/repair project.  Post #161 will provide the manpower and tools to do the job, while the veteran will supply the materials.
Anyone wishing to suggest a veteran who needs help with a project may submit the recommendation through the post’s Facebook link,
www.facebook.com/wathenalegionpost161, or mail it to American Legion Post #161 PO Box 303 Wathena Kansas, 66090.
“We look at this program as an opportunity to give back to veterans in the community,” explains Chris Walter, a member of Post #161.  “People often don’t submit their own names due to humbleness, so we’re asking other people to help by nominating folks they know who have projects we can help with.”
According to Walter, members of the American Legion post are interested in installing flag poles for people, as well.
American Legion Post #161 members completed their first Hammers 4 Heroes project in October of 2021 when they worked on a garage door project at the home of a veteran and his wife in Wathena.
